One of my favorite movies is Ever After, and one of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Danielle is about to enter the masked ball. As she gathers all her courage and resolve, she whispers to herself, “Just breathe.” Unlike Danielle, who is the picture of beauty and grace, when I’ve attempted to just breathe this last couple of weeks, I’ve resembled Typhoid Mary. Am I exaggerating? My hacking cough caused a woman who had just sat down next to me to move to the opposite end of the gate where we were both waiting to board a plane Monday.
I had caught the nasty respiratory infection that’s been going around. How could this be? Since I began using essential oils in March 2015, I’ve only been sick once, an ear infection caused by fluid trapped in my ear from a flight. Not viral. This respiratory infection? Viral.
I had to tell my Mom last weekend, since I was planning on meeting her and Dad for breakfast, and I didn’t want to share the wealth. My Mom, who always knows just what to say, says, “I thought you didn’t get sick because you use essential oils.” So, I tell her, being sick twice in 1 year and 7 months is not a bad track record. And nothing on this earth is fool proof. Sometimes, the flu shot doesn’t include the strain of flu that’s going around.
I had already been going over this in my head. Maybe I didn’t apply my Immunity Booster roller bottle to the bottom of my feet every time I left the house in the last little while. I find it easier to do this when wearing shoes and socks, as opposed to flip flops. I credit my Immunity Booster, which is 10 drops Thieves, 5 drops Purification and 3 drops Oregano essential oil, topped with grape seed oil in a 10 ml glass roller bottle, with keeping me healthy. Thieves and Purification are Young Living Essential Oils proprietary blends that support a healthy immune system. I frequently travel for work and am in airports and airplanes, both quite germy places, and had gone 16 months without getting sick.
I always wipe down my cart with those grocery store antibacterial wipes, but on occasion, there are no wipes. Sometimes, someone coughs or sneezes without covering their mouth, and I may or may not have known. Or they did cover their mouth and then put their hands on the cart I took when there were no antibacterial wipes. All of which reminds me of the movie, Contagion.
When I started feeling under the weather, I rolled a Get Better roller bottle blend on my feet every few hours – Thieves, Lemon, Oregano and Frankincense topped with grape seed oil. I’ve taken the combo before in a veggie capsule (4 drops Thieves, 4 drops Lemon, 3 drops Oregano and 2 drops Frankincense) and stopped what felt like a cold overnight.
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, sick happens. So, off I went, at my husband’s insistence, to the doc-in-the-box at Kroger. Can I just say that I love the Little Clinic? They’re open after hours, fix me up fast, and are always pleasant. They even call a few days later to see how I’m doing. I told the doc that I use essential oils, just to be on the safe side, to avoid any interactions with prescription medication. She told me I had a respiratory infection and prescribed antibiotics, steroids and cough pills, but not before asking me if I would take the medications. Because, I use essential oils.
Yes, I replied, I’ll take the medications, because I believe in both Eastern and Western medicine. I’m not an oils-only or prescription-drugs only person. Just as I’m not down with excluding one or more food groups as part of a diet. Everything in moderation, and nothing in isolation. Just as I would never advise someone to stop taking their medication and to only use essential oils, I know I need to take prescription drugs to kill an infection.
So, I’ve taken the antibiotics, steroids and cough pills. And, I’ve gone through a bag of Thieves cough drops and used Breathe Again, a roller bottle blend of Eucalyptus Staigeriana, Eucalyptus Globulus, Eucalyptus Blue, Laurus Nobilis, Peppermint, Copaiba, Myrtle, Blue Cypress and Rosehip essential oils. Both Breathe Again and Thieves Cough Drops, one of two oil-infused products with Drug Facts labeling, are Young Living Essential Oils proprietary products. Yesterday, I felt like I had turned a corner. While I usually bounce back quickly, this one was a hanger on-er. All this to say, I’m an example of Eastern and Western medicine working together to get me better.
As a side note, I quarantined myself and was on Day 4 of antibiotics and steroids when I boarded the plane for last week’s work, so not contagious. I was just as concerned that I not make anyone else sick, as I was about feeling better.
I think I was a little bothered by other’s assumptions about my essential oils use. That I never get sick and that I would hesitate to use prescription medications. Hopefully, I’ve dispelled those assumptions with some amount of grace. As an essential oils user, I am passionate about continually educating myself and others. So, instead of being annoyed by assumptions, I’ll view my experiences these last couple of weeks as opportunities to educate. And thank you, East and West, for putting me on the road to recovery.
Until next time, sick happens. How you respond is up to you. I hope you found this post helpful. Much love! Kim
