While shopping for Christmas presents last year, I decided to test what I’d heard about White Angelica, Young Living Essential Oils’ proprietary blend, also known as “patience in a bottle.” I put a drop on the felt pad inside my diffuser pendent and went Out There. I made it without incident, and thus, began my love affair with essential oil diffuser jewelry.

Disclosures and Disclaimers

Diffuser jewelry features porous components, such as lava stone, wood, leather and polymer clay, that absorb the essential oils.

Lava stone: Lava stone, or volcanic rock, is formed from the fire of a volcano. Rub a drop or two of essential oil onto the lava rock bead, and the oil is absorbed into the stone’s many pits. I got these cool fish lava rock beads, along with other lava rock beads in cool colors and shapes, from ViennaTeng‘s Etsy shop. I used sterling silver ear wires, head pins and wire and Swarovski crystals to bring these fish earrings to life.

Wood: Be sure to use unsealed wood. Same application as with lava stone beads. I got these dangles from Hobby Lobby and used antiqued copper ear wires and jump rings I had on hand to make these earrings.

Leather: Cuffs made of leather are perfect diffuser jewelry. Rub a drop or two of essential oil on the inside of the cuff, and not only will you catch the scent of the essential oil, but if the leather touches your skin, you’ll get a topical application of the essential oil. Same effect with lava stone, wood  and polymer clay components that touch your skin.

Polymer Clay: As with wood, make sure the polymer clay is not sealed by paint or some other finishing touch. Be careful when applying the essential oil to the clay. I put a drop on a pendent, and it didn’t immediately absorb, like I thought it would. Messy. As with lava stone, wood and leather, you’ll want to rub the essential oil into the clay. The pendents below were fashioned by my good friend, Dena.

How many drops of essential oil one should put on a piece of diffuser jewelry depends on the essential oil. Young Living Essential Oils are particularly potent because of the way they are produced, usually during the first few hours of steam distillation. The most volatile constituents in the plants boil first, creating a therapeutic essential oil. I’ve used the smell test when checking out other essential oils, and no other essential oils I’ve tested have as strong a scent or smell as much like the plant from which they’re derived, than Young Living Essential Oils. So, if you’re using a good, quality essential oil, trust me, one drop will do you. The scent typically lasts 4-8 hours.

If you like the lava rock and wood earrings featured in this blog, they’re available at Oils & Spoils Etsy shop.

Until next time, diffuse essential oils on the go to smell and feel Some Kind of Wonderful.

Oils & Spoils Extras

I really hoped to make it through this holiday season without having to bake, but I had a request from my Matron of Honor, Amanda, to make my famous cream cheese chocolate chip cookies for our get-together next weekend. My Mom got this recipe from the inside of a Philadelphia Cream Cheese box when I was a kid, and these cake-like cookies are still a favorite.

Cream Cheese Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup margarine (2 sticks)

8 ounces cream cheese

¾ cup granulated sugar

¾ cup brown sugar, packed

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 ½ cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

12 ounces chocolate chips

½ cup nuts (optional)

Combine margarine, softened cream cheese, and sugars. Mix until well blended.  Blend in eggs and vanilla.  Add combined dry ingredients.  Mix well.  Stir in chocolate chips (and ½ cup nuts – optional).  Drop rounded teaspoons onto greased cookie sheets.  Bake at 375 degrees 15-18 minutes or until lightly browned.

Shout out to Everyday Oil Solutions and my friend, Brandy. Her awesome vanilla extract makes my cream cheese chocolate chips extra tasty!
